Rosy dichroic pendant, take 2!

So, is this better than my last attempt? Or should I change strategy and go for inane blurry background like this;
Trouble is, I just love roses. Maybe I should just photograph them & leave out the jewellery!

Rosy dichroic glass pendant

Just had to share this photo with you all, which I took this evening with my point & shoot polaroid 7.0 megapixel camera. Only thing is, do you look at the rose more than the wire wrapped dichroic glass pendant? What do you think? Does the rose show off the pendant or hide it?

My 'Folksy lesson number one'..the photo

Folksy sounded just the sort of thing a complete computer novice like me needed.Somewhere to list, link you in with paypal for payments etc. Great stuff! However, after hours of reading through their info, I came to realise that I still needed good photos. My camera had been gathering dust as I could point and shoot, but didn't know much about close ups. All my photos of jewellery were, to date, blurry, grey & distinctly amateur-I certainly wouldn't buy from one of them. So Folksy lesson number one was to read all their tips on photography and ask questions on their forums. Here's where I learnt about using simple backgrounds, doing shots outside or in a light box etc. Then get out the cheap digital camera, read the instructions for the first time ever & play with it lots! Find the macro setting & trial all its other settings, including leaving the automatic flash off! Lets be honest at least the digital age means all those 'oops' pictures can be deleted immediately.

Then get someone who knows how to upload pictures to the computer, or read camera instructions again!(plenty of help on line or in local photo/computer shops for this) & file them under a name where you can find them! Finally your photographing skills will go from this...
 to this....

You wouldn't want to buy from the seller in the first picture, but you would the second picture...even though the item & seller are the same! It's all in the photo.

Finding folksy

The pleasure of selling jewellery in the Viewpoints gallery was gradually eroded as the cold grip of winter 2010 eased its icy fingers into every aspect of my life.Demanding day job, poor health, difficulty travelling, all dented my enthusiasm and before I knew it, not only was the business on a shelf, I wasn't even finding the energy to craft beautiful jewellery...Oh woe is me! Now how on earth do we end up in these hideous slumps in life? It was like someone had pulled the plug on the bath water and suddenly you're shivering in the cold!

So you've really got 2 choices. Continue to let the bath water out and vacate the bath or get a grip and put the plug back in and get that hot water tap running again! So, as a 'the bottle is half full' sort of person, I just had do do something. Wallowing in self misery is just too uncomfortable for someone like me to spend any great time indulging in. Now what had those customers wanted? Aah yes ..a website. They wanted to buy on line. So 'Mrs complete dinosaur with anything technical,' decided to peruse the internet again. Fortunately, on that day's frontpage of yahoo  there was a little piece about 'making money from home'.Utterly distracted from my original search, (which happens so easily on the internet...in fact did you originally intend to read this blog, eh?) I read that article. Amongst the list of items to try, there was one that stood out ...FOLKSY. Could this be my business lifeline?

A very good point of view

Heartened by actually managing to cover the £30 cost of the stall fee at my first two real live shows, I pondered the question of having a website, which so many customers had asked me about. I perused the internet as you do, but seemed to be too many people out there offering to do the job for me & realising it might cost hundreds of pounds, I completely chickened out this. I'm of that generation who left school the year they brought in a single computer to the school! Basically as 'un-computer nerdie' as you can get. However, I did now have some proof of selling necklaces over the £20 mark...even on a show day! So one last effort to try a shop again.

I decided to head to Keswick, far more affluent than West Cumbria, so should be someone who'll take my necklaces! I headed to a gallery that someone else recommended. I had to take the kids with me that day so I told them to look poor & impoverished & imagine their mother was in dire need of an income. They grinned at me and asked how much I would pay them for this service...cheeky kids!
Anyway, first gallery owner looked at just one of my necklaces & then peered down her nose at me. Perhaps me & the kids were looking too poor that day as she said 'I don't think so, it's not for here.' I was about to plead with her to at least look beyond the first necklace, but she swept her hand towards the door and said,  'Try a few doors up, they might have your stuff.' Clearly 'my stuff' was not good enough for this gallery or was it just my old jeans and the'Ken Dodd' type look my hair had taken on that day? I'll never know.

However, a few doors up was Viewpoints Gallery. A fantastic shop with jaw droppingly beautiful photographs of the Lake District. It also had some jewellery & a warm welcome. This time I knew what my necklaces could sell at & with a more confident, yet polite approach, I finally found a shop willing to display my items. Of course it is 'sale or return,' but at this early stage who am I to complain. This was the start of what is an ongoing reliable & beneficial relationship. Thank you Viewpoints

Jewellery Making Tool of the month July 2011

When I first started playing about with wire, I just swiped one of hubbie's pliers out of his tool box. Not surprisingly my first ham-fisted effort had 'jiggidy, jaggedy' bits of wire facing in all directions and not one smooth curve or  90 degree angle in sight. However, I eventually twigged on to how important the pliers were. There's all sorts out there- round nose, snipe nose, flat nose, needle nose, bent nose .....etc. The reason, though, that I have chosen to feature the above pliers is not because of its neatly finished and small ended nose. It is because of the handles. There is something about these particular pliers that makes the handles very cosy and comfortable to hold. This becomes increasingly important when, particularly chain mailing, you may be holding a set or two of pliers for hours at a time. So thank you sanctuary beads (Ebay or  http://www.sanctuarybeads.co.uk for supplying these wonderful pliers.

Make you smile item of the week...midnight miracle

This is Midnight Miracle, she was 10 days old when the photo was taken. She is a miracle as she had difficulty hatching & didn't stand properly for the first 48hrs. The executioner's axe was about to fall, but she suddenly stood up & is currently racing around the pen with her siblings. Now that just has to make you smile!

Folksy item of the week......deer

I had the pleasure of seeing a beautiful deer in the early dawn light this week. There's something very magical about them & not surprisingly they inspire a lot of artists & craftmakers alike. Folksy item of the week goes to Studio59 who has some lovely contemporary jewellery. Check her out at http://www.folksy.com/shops/studio59
