In Elizabethan times the colour purple could only be worn by certain people & this was dictated by the Sumptuary Laws! These people were the Queen, her mother, children, sisters & aunts. The King, his mother, children, brothers & uncles. Could you imagine not being allowed to don 'purple' just because you're a scabby commoner! Still at least beautiful spring flowers are not subject to any of man's laws - well except bluebells which are protected!
Purple also has a symbolic meaning for penitence & mourning.
The original dye was made from shells of the Mediterranean Murex & was hugely expensive, hence its long association with wealth & power.

The Purple Heart is the oldest award still given to American military personnel. It is awarded for being killed or injured whilst serving. Not really an award that you would seek, but nevertheless something to be worn or possessed with honour.
Some scientists believe that early life on earth was purple, not green. Instead of chlorophyll to catch the sun's energy, early microbes may have used retinal. This absorbs green , but reflects red & violet & so gave them the appearance of being purple.
